Background
Born and raised in rural Montana, Ieuan's childhood and adolescence were laced with poor academics and the labour that comes with a family-run cattle ranch. A year and a half after his sister, Carys, was born, their mother, Liesi, was killed in a hit and run, which irreparably changed Ieuan and the family. His father receded into a shell of himself, and he and his sister were turned over to the brusk, uncompassionate raising of aunts and uncles.
It was the year after the accident (when they picked their instruments in school) that Ieuan made a turn towards healing, the deep resonance of the cello bleeding away his pain. Over the years, Ieuan quickly outpaced the musical education the region offered, and, shortly after he turned 20, he moved to the east coast to pursue his gift.
He auditioned and was accepted as a protege of Alexei Vasiliev, which set a foundation within the Classical world. His work has since transitioned from being a performing cellist to an aspiring composer, his music now showcased in a few advertisements, indie films (one prominent at Sundance), and two symphonic showcases (full orchestra and quartet). He has recently been nominated for an award due to his work on a film he barely understands by well-known director/producer siblings he was previously ignorant of.
Life in New York was not without its levity, despite the culture shock he struggled to adjust to. There he met Leonor Harper, then an assistant to a country musician in need of a cellist for a background track after their hired musician bailed. Unable to deny a damsel in distress, Ieuan lent his music and they forged a relationship in the interludes of her work remaining in the city.
In the same period, he met Kristupas Staller while working as a clerk at a local record label. The punk rocker was in need of a place to smoke, but one thing lead to another and a cigarette became a good talk, weed and wine, clumsy texts and explorations of himself that were hard to embrace in a home town stuck in the 1950s.
With the congruent relationships, Ieuan grew. He married Leonor, and they had two children, Gwilym and Wren. History repeated itself and left Ieuan devastated, Leonor dying in a car accident on her way back from a work event and leaving his children to grapple with a reality he had hoped they would never face.
With Kristupas' support, and that of his husband, Sasha, Ieuan made it through those tumultuous weeks, then months, before finally leaving New York for a time. He returned home, so his children would have the support of his mother's family, cousins, horses, and work to keep them busy, and he himself to come to terms with what life had in store for him.
